28th January 1797. Six French frigates attacked the China Fleet off Java. Captain Lennox, who was Commodore, hoisted the flag of Admiral Rainier, and directed the ‘Ocean’, ‘Taunton Castle’, ‘Canton’ and ‘Boddam’ to hoist the French ensign. Admiral de Sercey hastily made sail from the fleet, and reported that he had sighted Admiral Rainier with five sail of the line and four captured French warships.
